OUR ANNUAL AWARDS
The Corey Trophy
THE COREY TROPHY APPLICATION – PDF
This trophy has been donated to the Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club by Dr. and Mrs. J. Michael Selander of Great Falls, Virginia in memory of Cory, their first muti-titled Golden.
The trophy will be awarded annually to the CGRC member whose owned or co-owned Golden Retriever achieves the most outstanding performance across multiple areas of endeavor during the preceding 12-month period. The trophy is to serve as an inspiration to all Chesapeake club members to strive to perfect the innate talents of their dogs in multiple areas.
The themes of this trophy have been artistically rendered by Marcia Schlehr. The trophy is composed of four base relief bronze castings, which symbolize the Golden Retriever in Breed, Obedience, Field and Tracking competition. In addition, the top of the trophy is crowned with a bronze sculpture of a Golden laying down and looking up at you. This is a reflection of our sentiment that above all else, Cory was first and foremost our family companion.
The point schedule for evaluating accomplishments in all four areas of endeavor, recognizing a range of accomplishment that spans class placements (with competition) and qualifying scores, all the way through attainment of AKC and GRCA recognized titles, up to Show Dog Hall of Fame (SDHF), Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH), and National Amateur Field Championship (NAFC) level titles.
It must be noted, however, that it is the intent of this trophy, that it be awarded first and foremost on the basis of diversity of accomplishment and secondly awarded on the basis of advanced proficiency in any one area of endeavor. Thus, the Golden who attains a companion dog title and a single breed class placement to be regarded as being more worthy of this trophy than the Golden who attains multiple Best of Breed wins. It is hoped that this trophy will encourage all Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club members to explore multiple areas of competition, and in this way better appreciate the versatility of the Golden Retriever and the incredible joy they can bring into our lives.

Asti Josh Uque Trophy (Retired)
2023 Dedication: Stephanie Wilking (nee Brooks) first saw this print of a working Golden Retriever in a field of grasses, beautifully gold framed 38” x 34” at a gallery while visiting the Outer Banks in the 90’s. The artist Robert Christie is one of the best-known dog and sporting painters in the South.
This work reminded Stephanie of her own three beloved dogs: “Asti” (the dam), “Josh” (a pup) and “Uque” (a second pup that was returned for being too wild & crazy). Stephanie purchased the print for herself. For a while it hung in her workplace at Mt. Carmel Animal Hospital and also in her home.
Each of Stephanie’s dogs earned their CD, though not with flying colors, but squeaking by with scores in the 170’s. Stephanie believes that people who don’t score high often get left out, and didn’t want that to happen to others. She donated the painting to Chesapeake Golden Retriever Club as an ongoing perpetual award. To earn this trophy, one must achieve a CD title in that year and also must submit an essay describing their personal experiences in their quest for the title as well as something to share with novice members to help them along their journey towards a CD.
In 2005, John Cotter with Colabaugh’s Ben Dar Rules “Ben” earned the Asti, Josh, Uque Companion Dog Memorial Trophy. This was it’s 8th year of presentation, and it has graced the Cotter home since that time. Not many in the Golden Retriever world do not know and like John Cotter. He has given a lifetime to the health and welfare of Golden Retrievers. Not only did he help create the Golden Retriever Foundation which collected > $4 million dollars for heath and rescue, he was president twice 1997-2005, and 2017-2022 (at the time of his passing on Oct 30, 2022 at the age of 79 years). He was GRCA President 2009-2013. What other President ended each Message with “And remember to kiss your dog today!”
The BOD wrote “Not many devote the energy you did. Your friends on the GRCA Board miss you” and “It’s hard to forget someone who gave us so much to remember!”
Locally CGRC and others like Potomac Valley, were graced to have John as a long-time member. He helped in his friendly guided manner at so many events and judged oh so many obedience matches. If you got a chance to be there with him, you would have experienced his signature supportive and informed presence. John was a competitor in many venues with his goldens. “Ben” was a Junior Hunter, 3x UDX and on the winning 2008 Team. “Ellie”, Mirasol’s A Berry Elegant Lady, whom John called “Special” was a Master Hunter, OTCH. His final accomplishments would be with “Woody”, Mirasol’s Wood Be Good CDX, JH. “Woody” now will stay by Carolyn’s side and be her companion.
So, at this time, it gives CGRC great pleasure and with the blessing of original donor Stephanie Wilking (nee Brooks), to retire the Asti Josh, Uque Perpetual Companion Dog Memorial Trophy to Carolyn Cotter, where it will be well displayed, appreciated and loved.
